Theodore Joseph Roemer Sr., age 102 of Madison Lake, died Monday, April 1, 2013 at Willow Gardens Nursing Home, Marion, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2013 at All Saints Catholic Church, Madison Lake with Fr. Robert Schneider, officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Madison Lake.

Ted was born August 7, 1910 in Mankato to Joseph H. and Elizabeth (Weber) Roemer. He grew up in Madison Lake and graduated from All Saints High School. He completed two years at Saint Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota and then completed his studies and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1932 with degrees in English literature and journalism. After graduation he worked two years for the Milwaukee Journal as a copy editor and regional sports writer.

Ted was united in marriage to Evelyn Jan Catulla on June 14, 1937 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato. He became postmaster of Madison Lake and remained there for 32 years, until 1965. After his retirement from government service, he started a house moving business, owned farm land, and developed land at Roemer's Cove and the Blue Marina. Ted was an author whose work included over 600 short stories and novelettes published in pulp fiction magazines and high school literature books during the 1930s and '40s. Ted successfully landed articles in the national publications "Argosy," "Boys Life," and "American Boy." He was a long-time regular contributor to area newspapers and he was a published local-area history author.

He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the founder of the Madison Lake Historical Society.

Ted most enjoyed telling a good story, either in person or on paper, and the friendships he made by sharing those stories. He was a visionary who cared about his community and his family.

Survivors include his three children, Theodore "Ted" Roemer Jr. of Madison Lake, Robert John "Bob" Roemer and his wife, Lois of Mankato, Elizabeth J. "B.J." White of Marion, Iowa; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his wife on August 4, 2003; siblings, Olivia (Thomas J.) Kinney, Catherine (Verne) Nelson, Edith (Elmo) Crosby, Cyril (Emily "Bunny") Roemer, Cletus Roemer, and Marie (Edward) Bobalek.
