Helen Mary Walkes

Helen Walkes of Mankato died December 24, 2018 at the age of 94.

Helen was born December 30, 1923 in Chippewa Falls, WI to John and Elsie Monk.  She graduated from Chippewa Falls High School where she sang in the choir and women's ensembles and was an accomplished flautest in the school band.  She graduated from the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester Minnesota in 1945.  She married Donald L. Walkes, September 7, 1945.  They were married 71 years.  She was employed in various areas of medicine in Rochester MN; Orange City, Iowa; Dayton, Ohio; Minneapolis, MN; and Le Sueur, MN.  She was a member of the U.S. Army Cadet Nurse Corps when World War II ended.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Rev. Deb Walkes of Mankato and Laurel (David) Helegerson of Summerville, S.C..; two grandsons, Donald (Amy) Helgerson of Summerville, S.C. and Samuel of Merritt Island Fl.; 3 great grandchildren, Chacey Gates, Bryce and Jensen Helgerson in S.C.; as well as many beloved relatives and friends.   She was preceded in death by her husband Donald; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Shirley Monk. 

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church, North Mankato, MN.  Visitation is one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to IKoronis Ministries, Paynesville, MN or donor’s choice.
