William “Bill” Henry Schimmel, Sr., age 91, of North Mankato, died on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 14, 2018 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato. Interment will be at Kern’s Oak Grove Cemetery, Belgrade Township, rural Nicollet.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Northview – North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato and also at the church for one hour prior to the services on Friday.
William, Sr., the son of Herbert Eugene and Alice (Gilmartin) Schimmel, was born on September 16, 1927 in Faribault. Bill graduated from Roosevelt High School. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. Bill graduated from the University of Minnesota and Winona State College. He married Naomi Elizabeth Schapekahm on June 18, 1960 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm. For 30 years, he was a high school teacher in Winona, Waseca and at Mankato West. Bill served as a Nicollet County Commissioner for 16 years and for the North Mankato Special Police. He was an active member at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Bill was a Minnesota State High School League Official for 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, Naomi Schimmel of North Mankato; sons, William (Stacy) Schimmel, Jr. of Stewartville, Richard (Lynn) Schimmel of Farmington, Katherine (Mike) Becker of Mankato, Susan (Bernie) Thompson of North Mankato, Elizabeth (Daniel) Schmidt of Ixonia, WI, and Patricia (Mike) Koestler of Mount Pleasant, WI; 24 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Donald (Barbara) Schimmel of Burnsville; siblings-in-law, Gerhard (Lois) Schapekahm, Marion Schapekahm, LeRoy (Carol) Schapekahm, Judy Schroer, and Ruth (Dean) Bartsch.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Bert Schapekahm, Richard Schapekahm, Harold Schroer; sister-in-law, Darleen Schapekahm.
