LaVern was born June 26, 1934 to Clement and Marie “Lilly” (Schwab) Goettl in Mankato. He attended SS Peter and Paul Catholic School and Franklin School in Mankato. He started his career working for John Deere delivering machinery. On December 28, 1957, he married the love of his life, Joan Mary Trio. Together they purchased a farm on the east side of Mankato where they raised their children on the family dairy farm. He was a very passionate farmer and father. After many years of farming, LaVern worked for Hermel.
A talented woodworker, LaVern created beautiful furniture for his wife. He enjoyed long Sunday drives, westerns, dancing, and playing the concertina, especially at the Farmers’ Market and Sunrise Cottages. He ushered at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and helped with soup suppers. He was an active member of the Catholic Order of the Foresters #552. He loved the holidays when he could decorate, give the grandchildren gifts, and share delicious meals in the log home. He always loved to joke and make people laugh. Above all, Lavern loved his wife and family.
Lavern is survived by his children, Dan Goettl of North Mankato, Mike (Winnie) Goettl of Washington, Jeanne (Tom) Lutz of Minneapolis, Jim (Anne) of Mankato: 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Louise Haefner; brothers, David (Cora) Goettl, and Adrian (Mary Jo) Goettl; sisters-in-law, Joyce Goettl, Barb Goettl, Darlene Trio, and Vera Trio; brother-in-law, August (Eileen) Trio; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends.
