Ronald Francis Schmitz, age 69 of Mankato, died unexpectedly at his home on November 6, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2018 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Ronald Francis Schmitz was born September 6, 1949 to Martin and Eileen (Curran) Schmitz in Grinnell, Iowa. After graduating from high school and working in the Grinnell area, Ron enlisted into the US Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1973. In December of 1974, he married Sherrie Clark in Omaha, Nebraska and they later divorced. They moved to Mankato, where they raised their three children, Mary, Martin, and Andrew. Ronald graduated from Mankato State University in1977.

Ron worked for the City of Mankato in the Public Works Department for 28 years, retiring in 2004. He was a member of VFW Post 950, American Legion Post 518, Eagles, Catholic Order of Foresters, and Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He enjoyed golf, yard work, and traveling.

Survivors include daughter, Mary Berg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Martin Schmitz, and his wife, Rachel of Parkdale, Oregon, Andrew and his wife, Samantha Schmitz of New Richland, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Bridget and Delaney Berg, Archer and Catherine Schmitz and Hattie Jenkins; mother, Eileen Schmitz of Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Patricia Schmitz and Katherine Schmitz of Omaha, Nebraska; brother, Lawrence Schmitz of Adel, Iowa; other extended family and many friends. Ronald was preceded in death by his father, Martin Schmitz.
