Arlyss (Johnson) Dirkx, age 93, of Primrose Retirement Community, Mankato, Minnesota, formerly of Amboy, Minnesota, went Home to be with the Lord at Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center on October 15, 2018.
Memorial Service will be at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 104 Silver Street W. of Mapleton, Minnesota 56065 on October 20, 2018 at 11:00 am. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Sterling Cemetery in Amboy, Minnesota. Luncheon follows after burial service. Memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Arlyss was born on September 30, 1925 to Alfred and Belinda (Velta) Johnson. Arlyss attended the Ridge Country School for eight years and graduated in 1943 at the Amboy High School.
On February 23, 1946 she was united in marriage to Peter A. Dirkx. The couple farmed in Sterling Township. Arlyss enjoyed being a farm wife, working in the bean fields & corn fields, gardening, bird watching, reading and was an avid MN Twins fan and cheered every ball game. She also volunteered at MRCI Thrift Store in Mankato, Minnesota. She was a member of the St. Teresa Catholic Church, Amboy Lions Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Bible Study Group at Primrose and Community Study Club.
Arlyss is survived by two daughters, Doreen (Patrick) Nickels of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Rev. Deann Dirkx of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Jeremy (Heather) Dirkx Olson, Elizabeth Dirkx Olson and Brenden Peter Nickels; two great-grandchildren, Aidan Olson and Evie Olson; sisters-in-law, Leora Johnson and Diane Marlin Dirkx; many nieces and nephews and many friends from far and near.She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter of 71 years; son, Dennis; her parents; and brothers, Corliss, Lyle, Orin, Orville, Russell and Gordon.
On behalf of Arlyss Dirkx, the family extends their greatest appreciation to the doctors, nurses and, staff workers of Primrose Retirement Center of Mankato, Mayo Health Systems Hospital of Mankato and Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center of Mankato for all the care and assistance during the time of our mother’s illness. Thank you and God bless you all for everything you did for our mother. A special thank you to Kirsten, Danielle and, Wendy. We also would like to thank all of her wonderful friends at Primrose as well as, the Chaplains who visited and prayed with our mom. Also, the ASL interpreters who interpreted for Rev. Deann during the time of her mother’s medical meetings and funeral. Thank you for all the cards, flowers, calls and visits from her friends while Arlyss was in Hospice.
