Barbara Hogan, age 91, of North Mankato, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Cottagewood Senior Communities of Mankato.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Mankato with the Reverend Chris Beebe officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Northview - North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Dr., North Mankato and also for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial at Minneopa Cemetery.
Barbara was born on December 28, 1926 to Rueben and Edna Moline in Minneapolis. She attended public schools in Minneapolis and graduated from North High School in 1945. She attended Minneapolis Business College and worked as a private secretary for several companies in Minneapolis.
Barbara continued her education graduating from Northwest Institution of Medical Technology and worked as a Medical Laboratory and X-ray Technician for doctors in Minneapolis and Wayzata. She also took training in Electrolysis.
On November 25, 1960, she married Dr. Joe Hogan in Minneapolis. In 1964, the family moved from Golden Valley to Mankato. Here Barbara opened the first Electrolysis Studio in Mankato.
Barbara returned to school and received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Mankato State University. She taught in the St. Peter Public School for 21 years including eight years as the coordinator of Special Education and while on sabbatical, graduated from the University of South Florida/Tampa with her Ed.S. Degree. During her professional career, she was active in a number of organizations including American Speech-Language-Hearing Assn., MN Speech and Hearing Assn., Association for Retarded Children (ARC), Mankato Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, where she was a past President. She was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa and past President of the Mankato State University Chapter.
Barbara had many interests and was a member of Mankato State University Faculty Wives Book Club and Bridge Club, Deep Valley Quilters Guild and Mankato Art History Club. She enjoyed traveling and visited Scandinavia several times where she found relatives in Sweden. She loved gardening, entertaining and spending time with her family and friends especially at the family lake home at Nisswa, MN. She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and served on many committees throughout the years including the Vestry, Episcopal Church Women (ECW), Altar Guild, Outreach, Finance Committee and others.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Joe Hogan of North Mankato; son, Joe Hogan (Kirsten Davis) of North Mankato; two grandchildren, Laura (Joshua) McNamara of Mankato and Christopher Hogan (Kelli Johnson) of North Mankato; two great grandchildren, Connor and Kaylin McNamara; two sisters, Hazel Haas of Los Angeles, CA and Joyce Copp of St. Charles, MI; three nieces, two nephews, and five cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Larry and Bill; and one brother, Walter Moline.
Barbara’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude for the compassionate care she received from all the staff of Cottagewood Senior Communities and Mayo Clinic Hospice nurses.
