LaVonne “Lonnie” Marie (Hill) O’Brien, 85 of Mapleton, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 21, 2018 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Mapleton. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, September 20, 2018 at St. Teresa Catholic Church and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mapleton. The family prefers memorials be given to the Mapleton Public Library, Maple River Loaves & Fishes, or The Closet. Olson-Tichenor Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Lonnie was born Oct. 29, 1932, in Ayrshire, Iowa, to Melvin and Pauline (Bohn) Hill. She was a 1951 graduate of Ayrshire High School. She attended Iowa Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, where she earned her teaching certificate.
She began her teaching career in Fonda, Iowa, where she met the man who would become her husband for 61 years, William Gerald O’Brien. They married at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church on Aug. 24, 1957. They had five children, Michael, Anne, Christine, Timothy and David. They lived In Fenton, Iowa, Osage, Iowa, and Mason City, Iowa, before settling in Mapleton in 1970. In Mapleton, she was the director of the Child Care Center and taught preschool until her retirement in 1998.
In her later years, she worked at the Mapleton Public Library and was an active member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church. She also volunteered with the Mapleton Community Home Auxiliary, Maple River Loaves & Fishes Food Shelf, The Closet, and Meals on Wheels.
She leaves behind her husband, William; her children, Michael of Mapleton, Anne (David) Cutter of Oregon, Wisconsin, Christine (Kent) Kuball of Hutchinson, Minnesota, Timothy (Eric Holtz) of Omaha, Nebraska, and David (Heidi) of Blue Earth; and her brother, Max (Judy) Hill of Minneapolis. She is also survived by the loves of her life, her grandchildren, Philip, Sarah and Will Kuball, Sam and Christopher Cutter, and Ryan Ihle (Alissa Bare), Shelby and Keegan; and her great-grandchildren, Paisley and Paityen Ihle. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Kenneth in 1940.
