Marjorie (Deming) Fitterer, age 89, died July 25, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mankato, on Friday, August 3, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. John Kunz officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary, and also at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. Burial will take place at Woodland Hills Memorial Park following the service.
Marjorie was born on December 20, 1928, to Wyatt and Helen Deming in Faribault, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm near Morristown and graduated from Morristown High School in 1946. In high school she participated in 4-H, winning awards in fashion and the Minnesota State 4-H bread baking championship at age 18. She earned her elementary education teaching degree from Mankato State Teachers College. Marjorie started her teaching career in Luverne, Minnesota, and taught elementary education in the Mankato Public Schools until retiring in 1993.
Marjorie married Harold Fitterer on August 11, 1956, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. They made their home in North Mankato with their daughters. Marjorie’s resilience and devotion to her family was even more evident after Harry’s death in 1977, as she continued to nurture her daughters while teaching. Her daughters are eternally grateful for their mom’s love, guidance, and good example. She was a wonderful grandmother who had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren, in whom she instilled a love of flowers, hot tea, home-baked pies and reading.
Marjorie is especially remembered for her kindness and interest in others, generous spirit, and love of gardening. She cherished her many friends, was a Master Gardener with beautiful gardens, and enjoyed participating in many different clubs and activities. She was an avid volunteer over the years, sharing her time and talents with many Mankato area programs. Marjorie was passionate about helping children learn and sparking in them a sense of curiosity and wonder. Marjorie enjoyed traveling abroad with her family, as well as vacations within the United States. Her most memorable trip was in 1953, spending the summer in Europe and traveling on the Queen Mary.
Marjorie is lovingly survived by her daughters and their husbands, Cindy (Gary) Amoroso, Jean (Brad) Lance, and Lisa (Eric) Johnson. Marjorie was beloved by her grandchildren, Joe Lance, Kathryn (Jeff) Naumann, Julia (Ben) Gustafson, Allison Johnson, Robert Lance, Kelsey Klingel, Mark Johnson, and John Lance. She is also survived by her sister, Beulah (David) Noel and her brother Roger (Carol) Deming; Harold’s siblings, Mildred Hanson, Cyril (Shirley) Fitterer, and Mary Ellen (Orland) Nelson; as well as many nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her many friends and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; parents; brother W. Donald Deming; and infant grandson Patrick Fitterer Lance.
In keeping with her passion for education, memorial donations may be made for scholarships to the Harold J. and Marjorie Deming Fitterer Endowment at Minnesota State University-Mankato or to Lakeview Homecare & Hospice, Stillwater, in recognition of the exceptional care she received.
