Gerald “Jerry” Michaletz, age 89, passed away on July 25, 2018 at Ecumen Pathstone Living in Mankato, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato. Military honors provided by the Mankato Area Veterans Memorial Squad. Interment will be held at a later date.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, July 30, 2018 at the Northview-North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Dr., North Mankato and also at the church for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
Jerry was born December 18, 1928 to Fred and Marie Michaletz of Green Isle, MN, the oldest of 7 children. Jerry graduated from Glencoe High School and St. John’s University. He joined the U.S. Air Force and obtained the rank of Captain. He completed 26 missions piloting a crew of B-29 bombers. After the war, he joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Jerry continued his love for flying by owning a private airplane for many years. He achieved and recently was awarded the “Master Pilot” award by the FAA. In addition, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
Jerry and Faye Casper married on May 17, 1952 in Cleveland, MN. Jerry came to Mankato in 1960 and built a successful career in the life and health insurance business. He received many industry awards for top sales performance. He also founded Kato Insurance Agency, now owned by son Scott, and Michaletz Financial Services, now known as Discipline Advisors, owned by son Joe. He was also a founder of the Valley National Bank. Jerry generously supported the Mankato community through his involvement in Jaycees, Sertoma, Knights of Columbus, and many other civic organizations. He was an active member of the church choir and generally loved to sing.
Jerry and his wife Faye enjoyed their retirement years in Walker, MN on Leech Lake and in Good Year, AZ. They moved back to Mankato a few years ago. Jerry’s recent years have been devoted to caring for the love of his life, Faye, as her health declined due to Alzheimer’s.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Faye of Mankato; children, Michele (Chris) of St. Paul, Patti of Aurora, CO, Scott (Gail) of North Mankato, Joe (Christine) of North Mankato, and Megan (Tim) of North Mankato; daughter-in-law, Sue Michaletz; 17 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and 5 brothers and sisters.
He was preceded in death by his son, Cass Michaletz; son-in-law, Steve Onody; and brother, Marty Michaletz.
Jerry’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Ecumen Pathstone Living and Mayo Clinic Health System and Hospice, both of Mankato for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Mankato Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice or St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Mankato.
