Herbert Neufeld Fast was born to Abraham and Agatha (Neufeld) Fast on May 3, 1930. At the age of 6, Herb moved with his 13 siblings from Montana to Minnesota.
His life journey included high school in Mountain Lake and two years of military service stationed in the United States, Germany, and France.
After his military service, Herb went on to study at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, followed by 30 years of employment at Kato Engineering in Mankato. During his tenure at Kato Engineering, Herb had the opportunity to travel to Egypt and Zaire, among other countries.
Herb was a man of deep faith and curiosity. His desire to learn continued on throughout his life as he took time to educate himself on topics that included physical science, theology, history, and family genealogy.
He was united in marriage to Marcella Bartel on August 24, 1957. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Andrea and Renee, and later eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was proud of his family’s achievements and enjoyed sharing his interests with them.
Herb also had an appreciation for the outdoors. He often took his family on nature walks and enjoyed spending time tending flowers. Local squirrels and birds made his home their own.
As a member of Hilltop United Methodist church, Herb was involved in the life of the church, teaching an adult bible class and serving in various capacities.
He will be greatly missed by all.
