Arlo and Kathleen Hurley of Big Stone City, South Dakota, formerly of Mankato, MN, died in an automobile accident on Monday, June 18th, 2018. Arlo was born in St. James, MN on November 30, 1938. Kathleen was born in Mankato, MN on December 8, 1946. They met in Worthington, MN where Arlo was a teacher, and Kathleen had been assigned as his student teacher, and this is where their love story began. They were united in marriage on November 25, 1967 in North Mankato, MN.

Arlo and Kathy recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and were looking forward to new adventures here and abroad as they investigated genealogy research. During winter you could find them basking in the Arizona sun, and in the summer, they loved days at their lakeside retreat.

Their grandchildren were their favorite people on the planet. Alexandria, Connor, Aidan, Ethan, Raymond, and Andrew hold close to their hearts the wonderful memories they were able to make with Mom and Dad. Alexandria loved to travel and spend time with her grandparents, and often brought her friends, too, who were treated as bonus grandchildren.

Connor cherishes the memory of catching his first fish with them, and Grandpa had just given him his old law books, a shared passion. Aidan was always up for playing Pfeffer with them and will forever have a love of the great outdoors because of their enthusiastic influence. Ethan and Grandpa worked the crosswords together, and he and Grandma always found time for a card game, or just walking the beach and talking.

Andrew loved to cook with Grandma and Raymond loved to make ice cream with her, and both boys always looked forward to playing Murder with Grandpa. Raymond was especially excited to just recently try the new 4-wheeler with him.

Mom loved gardening, cooking, watching the birds visit her feeders, and had just recently signed up to volunteer with Hospice. Dad loved crossword puzzles, cards, finding new home projects to work on in his Irish man cave, and telling tales.

They were both educators, Dad teaching at military bases around the world before becoming a high school teacher in MN at various schools, retiring from St. Clair High School in MN. Mom earned her PhD in Technical Writing and Rhetorical Theory after staying home with her children, and then became a Professor in the English Dept. at MN State University, Mankato.

Our grief is that these amazing, generous people still had more to share with us, and the world. Our comfort is that they had their final wish, of leaving this world together to enter the glory of Heaven.

Arlo and Kathleen are survived by their son Adam (Kathrin) Hurley of Mankato and daughters Allison (Brian) Perry of Eden Prairie and Christine (Steven) Oldenburg of Mapleton; grandchildren Raymond and Andrew Hurley, and Alexandria, Connor, Aidan, and Ethan Oldenburg; brothers Neil Hurley of Florida and LowWell (Marcia) Hurley of St. James, sister LeiLani Hurley of St. James, sister-in-law Jackie (Loren) Hurley of St. James, and special family friend Janet Malmgren of St. James; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished family members and friends.

They are preceded in death by their parents, Valeria (Sandmeyer) Hurley and Lloyd and Irma Hendley; siblings Caroline and Harold Dougherty, LaVon and Edward Goor, Loren Hurley, Darrell (Joe) and Cyrilla (Cy) Hurley, Viola (Vi) Hurley, Jim and Mary Hendley, Pat Hendley; an infant brother, and children and grandchildren lost in miscarriage.
