Dorla Birr, 85, passed away June 14, 2018 from complications of multiple myeloma. A memorial service will be held at Hosanna Lutheran Church in the GracePoint Chapel, Mankato, on: Tuesday, June 19, at 11:00 a.m. with family visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Mankato Mortuary is assisting Dorla’s family.
Dorladyne Faye Gilberts was born to Roy & Grace Gilberts on August 31, 1932. Her dad passed away when she was 7 and Dorla and her mom moved frequently in the years that followed, living in both Mankato and Amboy. Dorla graduated from Amboy High School in May, 1950. She attended Mankato State Teachers College for two years graduating with her teaching degree in 1952. She taught at an Alden country school for one year. Dorla married Orin Birr on April 26, 1953 and they made their home on a rural St. Clair farm. They raised six children: Larry, Steve, Scott, Pam, Brenda & Cheryl. Dorla returned to Mankato State College in 1967 for another two years and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1969. She taught early childhood education at the St. Clair Public School from 1969 to 1995. Beside teaching young children, and being active in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives, Dorla also had a passionate interest in MN history, Native American history, family history, geology, and she loved music.
Dorla is survived by her husband of 65 years, Orin Birr, St. Clair, two sons, three daughters and spouses: Steve & Becky Birr, Buffalo, MN; Scott & Jackie Birr, Mankato; Pam & Neil Mattick, Mankato, Brenda Birr, Madison, WI; Cheryl & Dan Klages, St. Clair, 12 grandchildren: Samuel, Sara, & Spencer Birr; Jeremy, Jennifer, & Jeanna Birr; Jason, Travis & Kevin Mattick, Justin, Alaena & Therese Klages; and 4 great-grandchildren; three nieces: Darla Kopischke, Dee Waldron, Joan Kleen; one nephew & spouse: Richard & Gerry Schulz; five sisters/brothers-in-law: Marliss Rosin, Arlene & Hilbert Bergemann, and Alvin & Susie Birr, and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents, one son, Larry G. Birr, two sisters & spouses: Lucille & Herman Kleen, Violet & Willard Schulz, two brothers & spouse: Emmett ‘Bud’ Gilberts, Richard ‘Dick’ & Juanita Cue, one niece: Gerry Fox, and three nephews-in-law: Howard Fox, Linver Kopischke, & Arnie Waldron; parents-in-law: Joe & Marcella Birr, sisters/brothers-in-law: Luverne Birr, Marvin & Pat Birr, Janet Birr, George Rosin, and two nephews: Alan Rosin and Russell Birr.
