Marvin “Marv” Metzler, age 79, of Mankato, died on Friday, February 23, 2018.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 1 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary (2060 Commerce Drive) and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mayo Clinic Hospice, Mankato, or the donor’s choice.
Marvin was born on April 15, 1938 in Waseca to Martin and Sybil (Herrley) Metzler. He attended High School in Waldorf. Marv served in the United States Army from 1961-1963. On May 3, 1964, Marv was united in marriage to Judy King in St. Clair. He worked for the State of Minnesota for 35 years. Marv worked for 17 ½ years for the DOT in Mankato and 17 ½ years for Mankato State University, before retiring in 1998. Marv was a member of the Eagle Lake American Legion Post #617 for 39 years where he served as past commander. He formed the Eagle Lake Legion baseball team and managed it for 27 years. He also served on many boards and was very active in the legion’s bingo program. Marv was an active member of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church and served on several boards. After retirement, Marv enjoyed spending a lot of time at his lake home on Lake Ida in Alexandria. He loved fishing, hunting, and watching all of the University of Minnesota Gopher sports and Minnesota Vikings. He was a big supporter of his children and grandchildren and following their activities.
Marv is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy of Mankato; son, Darryl and his fiancé Kathy Goettl of Eagle Lake and his children, Kate (Tim) Phillips of Mankato and Matthew Metzler of Eagle Lake; daughter, Paula Metzler of Mankato; daughter-in-law, Jana Metzler of Mankato; siblings, Melvin Metzler of CO, Karen (Jerry) Meister of Waseca, and Sandy (Gene) Matz of Waseca; sister-in-law, Gloria (Harold) Linde of Mankato; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, David; sister, Barb (Carroll) Schlueter; father and mother-in-law, Walter and Helen King; and nephew, Thomas Linde.
