Steve age 76 of Mankato, died Monday, February 19, 2018.
Memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday at Mankato Mortuary with visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to BENCHS animal shelter.
Steve was born August 13, 1941 to Loran “Bub” and June (Timmerman) Sharits in Mankato. As a child, he lived in various places including Hibbing, Newton, Kansas and Fairmont. Later in life, he resided in North Mankato and St. Clair, eventually returning to Mankato as his permanent residence.
Steve graduated from Mankato High School in 1959, and enlisted immediately into the Air Force, where he trained in heavy ground communications maintenance. He was assigned to the territory of Guam at the transmitter site on Anderson AFB. Upon returning to the States, he was stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida at the transmitter site there.
After leaving the Air Force in 1963, he returned to Mankato, and was employed at E.F. Johnson Co, as a line technician for the radios they were manufacturing. He then joined KEYC-TV as a studio engineer. During this time, he enrolled at Mankato State University, and graduated in 1973 with a BS degree in mathematics. He was hired by Mankato State in 1969, and was employed as Instructional Communications Engineering Chief until his retirement in 2000.
Steve had many diverse interests and hobbies, including tennis, water skiing, boating, photography, sound and home theater systems, woodworking, bowling, bridge, camping and watching the MN Twins and Vikings. He was co-founder of the Mankato Modeleers model airplane club, which later morphed into the Bald Eagles.
While living in St. Clair, he served on the City Council for four years. At the time of his death, he enjoyed watching and learning from DVD’s of higher education in mathematics, science, and philosophy.
Steve is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter, Rachelle Sharits of Mankato; son, Timothy (Lisa) of Mound; brother, Dean (Dely) of Tega Cay, SC; sisters, Rea (Michael) King and Wendy (Sandy) Allen all of Mankato; step-son, Derek Groen of Mankato; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his faithful canine companion, Freddie Buddy. Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
