William “Bill” Alan Maher, age 88 of Mankato, died as the result of hit and run accident on January 24, 2018 in Mankato.
He was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada the second son of Jean and William Maher. He served in the Canadian Army during the Korean Conflict where he was trained as an artillery spotter. He used his training after his two years in the military to work as a surveyor in Canada, Ghana and Nigeria. He met his wife Barbara in Nigeria where his houseboat docked off the village in the Niger Delta where she was teaching as a Peace Corp. volunteer. They were married in Nigeria in 1965 and returned to Canada for a year before they moved to Minnesota where he attended the University of Minnesota to get his engineering degree in 1969. After a year as a research fellow with the University he took a job with Bolton and Menk in Mankato. Bill successfully ran for Blue Earth County Commissioner and served for 10 years. Upon retirement in 1988 he took a job in the Canadian Arctic as assistant Public Works Director in Baffin Island NWT, Canada for four years. He retired again in 1992 and spent the next 22 years Mattawa, Ontario for the summer and Mankato for the rest of year.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years; two sons, Terry of Mankato, Brian of Bellingham, WA; Preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mankato. Visitation will be from 9:30 until the time of the service at the church on Monday. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Blue Earth County Library or the donor’s choice. Mankato Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
