Gordon R. Gemmill, age 89, of Mankato, died on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Laurel’s Peak. 

 

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Private family burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery.  Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.  Memorials are preferred to Resurrection Lutheran Church. 

 

Gordon Roger, son of Archie and Mabel (Webster) Gemmill, was born on a farm in Martin County, MN on September 11, 1928.  Gordon attended rural country schools.  Gordon was united in marriage to Blanche Ambrose on September 1, 1949 in Alpha, MN.  They farmed for a few years and then moved to Fairmont, Lake Crystal, and then to Mankato in the early 1970’s.  Gordon had a commercial driving license for over sixty years.  He started driving a cream truck, picking up cream on farms.  He delivered gas to farmers, drove a gas transport truck for Indianhead truck lines, and delivered freight to hardware stores for Cotter and Company.  Gordon also drove bus for the city of Mankato in the campus area for several years.  Gordon had over sixty years of accident free driving.  Gordon was an active member of First Christian Church until its closing and then became a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed driving, camping, and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

 

Gordon is survived by two sons, Richard Gemmill and Dan (Barb) Gemmill all of Mankato; daughter, Barbara (Peter) Rhoads of Colorado Springs, CO; two granddaughters, Amanda (Alex) Swanson of Kasota and Britney (Nate) Stewart of Mankato; two great-grandsons, Blake and Adam Swanson of Kasota; sisters, Nadine (Wayne) Schumacher of New Hampton, IA and Mary Beth (Jim) Blackburn of Tahlequah, OK; brother, Melvin (LaDonna) Gemmill of Billings, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Mabel Gemmill; wife, Blanche; sisters and their husbands, Avis (Walter) Olson and Neola (Joe) Bass; father and mother-in-law, Frank (Carrie) Ambrose; brothers-in-law and their wives, Edward (Sally) Ambrose and Charlie (Janet) Ambrose.
