Sandra K. Oppegard, age 72 of Vernon Center died peacefully at her home on Thursday, December 7, 2017 after a courageous, two year battle with cancer.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Vernon Center. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m., until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. Mankato Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

Sandy was born July 17, 1945 to Clarence and Lucille (Klein) Oppegard in Faribault, MN. She attended one of the last one-room school houses in southern MN, District 1790. Those days were Sandy’s cherished memories in a truly picturesque setting. She loved the farm where she grew up, particularly her horses and her time spent in the oak tree woods. She grew up attending the Congregational Church in Medford. She graduated from Faribault High School and went on to get her degree in social work. She moved to Vernon Center where she purchased a two story Tudor house, previously home to a gas station, where she had ample storage, at least for the first few years, for her antique business. She was the director of the South Central Work Force Council for 23 years, and was on the Vernon Center City Council for over 20 years. Upon retiring, she focused on her antique business, enjoying dealing with friends and customers.

Sandy enjoyed traveling and saw most of the US except for a few places on the east coast. Computers and electronics of any kind were her toys. Documentaries and political news were her focus. She enjoyed politics (not so much lately) and relished a political conversation. Her outspoken ways became a trademark. Friends and family loved and respected her for it. Sandy was very close to her niece and nephew and was very proud of their achievements. She was an avid Facebooker where many checked-in to read her often humorous, always opinionated viewpoints.

Sandy is survived by her sister, Renee (Ron) Morris of Waterville; niece Baily Morris and fiance, Jeff Coleman of Winona; nephew, Nick Pavek of Faribault; numerous cousins and many friends and acquaintances who became part of her extended family whom she loved dearly.
