Shirley Irene Ehlers

Shirley Irene Ehlers, 89 of Mankato and formerly from Mapleton, died Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Autumn Grace Senior Living in Mankato after a battle with cancer.

Per Shirley’s request, private family services will be held. Graveside service will take place at a later date at Holberg Cemetery. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Shirley was born July 11, 1928 in Mankato to Louis and Hazel (Hibbard) Holberg. She married William Thoemke and was blessed with two children, Cathy and Christopher. William later died and Shirley married George Ehlers. For many years, Shirley worked at Mapleton Childcare Center. In her spare time, she enjoyed painting, reading, sewing, quilting, and gardening.

She is survived by her daughter, Cathy (Kurt) Preston of Mapleton; granddaughter, Michelle (Randy) Doyen of Amboy; and great-grandchildren, Tate, Emma, and Maya Doyen. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, William; second husband, George; son, Christopher Thoemke; and sister, Dorothy Nienow.
