Gary was born on May 8, 1931, to George and Marian (Bateman) Scott. He grew up in Mankato where he worked as a paperboy for the Mankato Free Press and graduated from Mankato High School in 1949. He raced motorcycles competitively before marrying Joyce Michels on December 12, 1954. They raised five children and lived near Garden City for 53 years. Gary and Joyce Scott were active members of the Garden City Christian Church for over 60 years where he served faithfully as a trustee and deacon and as Boy Scout leader in the community. He volunteered his time with Habitat for Humanity and contributed to others in need. Early in his working life, he was the owner of a house moving company and then worked hard as a tool and die maker at Mankato Corporation for 30 years before retiring in 1995. He was known as a person who could fix anything. Spending time with family, camping, hiking, riding bicycle and motorcycle, and woodworking brought him pleasure. In later years, he could be seen riding his recumbent bicycle around Mankato.
