Joyce Helen Genevieve Hughes, age 96, of Lake Crystal, died Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at Crystal Seasons in Lake Crystal.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato. Visitation will be held one hour before service on Wednesday. Interment will be in Minneopa Cemetery, rural Mankato.

Joyce was born September 28, 1921, the youngest of 11 children to Willard and Minnie (Johnson) Gilland in rural Morgan, Minnesota. She graduated from Morgan High School in 1939 and later Mankato Beauty School. She met Orville Hughes on a blind date and they were later married on December 28, 1942, at her family farm. Joyce was a homemaker for her family. She owned and operated A & A Western Store in Lake Crystal from 1976 until her retirement. Joyce was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Crystal where she was a past Deacon and Elder and member of the Ladies aid. Joyce loved to knit, her dog, Pinky and spending time with family.

Joyce is survived by her two children, Sue (Bud) Upton of Cle Elum, WA and Lonny (Joan) Hughes of Lake Crystal; eight grandchildren, Jason (Mary) Upton, Troy Upton, Angela Harrolle, Kristen (Laramy) Lawson, Mandy Hughes, Tyler Hughes, Casey Hughes, Dusty (Lauren) Hughes; eleven great-grandchildren, Blake and Allie, Addison and Justice, Austin, Dayton, Grayson, and Weston, Kate, Alli, and Claire; nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville on August 25, 1983; grandson-in-law, Bruce Harrolle, ten siblings, Arthur, Hazel, Marvin, Howard, Merrell, Walter, John, Mildred, Harold, and an infant girl.
