Eva Mae Hughes
A wonderful host of angels welcomed Eva Mae Benedict Hughes home on October 2, 2017. They will have quite a reunion of cooking, playing cards and visiting to their hearts content. Eva lost her fight with Alzheimer’s surrounded by her family and caring staff at Cottagewood Senior Communities.
Eva’s joy of people was endless and the saving grace to her disease. Even if she did not know you, she had no problem visiting with you and sharing some quick wit. The home she made for her family was always open to friends to share a cup of coffee as well as a little bit of gossip. And then the miles and miles of travel she experienced with her family and husband is incredible. Mostly by car, Eva had the opportunity to visit sights in 49 states, Mexico and Canada.
Eva took such pride in her work and hobbies. Anyone visiting could go home with her famous dill pickles only after viewing the precision of her work and listening to her giggle as she shared secrets of cleaning cucumbers in the washing machine. Eva was so generous and thoughtful with her gifts, especially her trademark dishes such as wild rice, poppy seed bread, potato salad and sweet corn. Staples of our memories that cannot be fully recreated but live on just the same.
Preceded by beloved son, Paul; siblings, Dale and Vivian; parents, Page and Ethel Benedict; aunts and uncles.
Survived by husband Tom Hughes; 5 children: Jeffrey (Teresa Gillis) Hughes and Greg (Gail) Hughes of Mankato, Laura (Terry Nowels) Dorudiani of Colorado Springs; Joseph (Sheila) Hughes of Janesville and Christine Hughes of La Crosse, WI; 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; Sister: Mary Jane Bair of Mankato, loving in-laws, nieces and nephews.
