Eugene LeRoy Nusser, 71 of Mankato, died Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato.
Service will be held at 3pm, Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary with visitation starting at 1pm. Burial with full military honors will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Please share a memory of Eugene with his family at www.mankatomortuary.com.
Eugene was born August 31, 1946 in Mankato to Raymond and Luverne (Possin) Nusser. He graduated from Loyola School in 1965. Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 27, 1965. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Sharpshooter Badge before being honorably discharged on December 26, 1971. On June 5, 1965, Eugene married Margaret Tierney at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mankato. Together, they raised four children and later divorced. After the army, Eugene did road construction through-out the Midwest and soon became a professional truck driver. After a few years, he began driving truck for Lloyd Lumber, where he would work for almost 40 years. In retirement, he volunteered as a driver for ECHO Food Shelf. In his spare time he enjoyed the outdoors and taking care of animals. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He enjoyed gun collecting, canning, cooking and sharing his knowledge and talents with others.
He is survived by his children, Paula (John) Harstad of Mankato, Douglas (Theresa) Nusser of Mankato, Janet Nusser of St. Paul, and Eric (Jessica) Nusser of Mankato; grandchildren, Amanda Nusser, Anthony Nusser, Logan Harstad, Devin Harstad, Nataska Nusser, Nikita Nusser, and Owen Nusser; as well as his siblings, Carl (Jim) Nusser and Kathleen (Toots) Sieberg.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; and four of his siblings, Howard Nusser, Gerald Nusser, Cletus Nusser, and infant baby Nusser.
