James Russell Christensen

James “Jim” Russell Christensen, age 78, of Mankato, passed away peacefully July 19, 2017 at Oaklawn Nursing Home.

Jim was born July 8, 1939 to Russell and Agnes Christensen in Mankato, Minnesota. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1957. Jim was a veteran with the United States Air Force. Jim had been a Snap-On Tool distributer working out of Omaha, Nebraska. He was also a Hot Air Balloon enthusiast and flew commercially for 35 years in the New Mexico and Arizona area. He enjoyed mechanical things; if it burned gas and had wheels Jim loved it. Jim was a free spirit and never let the grass grow under foot very long. His life’s travels brought him back to Mankato where he lived with his close friend, Barbara Menton.

Jim is survived by three brothers, Steven (Susan) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Mark of Phoenix, Arizona, and Robert (Deborah) of Windsor, Colorado; sister, Ann (Doug) Andersen of Apple Valley, Minnesota; close friend, Barbara Menton; dogs, Fred and Goldie; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, David and Richard. Jim was loved by his family and friends and he a big brother to all of his siblings. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Our thanks to the nurses, doctors, and staff of Mayo Hospital and Oaklawn Home in Mankato, as well as to the Hospice caregivers.

A private family burial will be at a later date.
