James “Jim” Michael Carey, age 84, of Mapleton, died on Monday, May 29, 2017 at the Mapleton Community Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Mapleton. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at St. Teresa and will continue one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mapleton. Olson-Tichenor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are preferred to Mapleton VFW Post #5338 or the donor’s choice.
James was born on October 15, 1932 to Paul and Esther (Denn) Carey on the family farm. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1950. Jim served in the United States Army from 1954-1956. He was stationed in Okinawa and was a radio operator during the Korean War. On October 27, 1956, Jim was united in marriage to Rita Goettl. She died in 1971. He married Brigitte Schubert on July 15, 1977. Jim was a farmer in the Mapleton area his entire life. He was a member of the Mapleton VFW Post #5338 and was a past commander. He was also a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Jim enjoyed curling, playing cards, fishing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife, Brigitte; children, Shari (Ron) Ward, Patrick (Colleen) Carey, Jody Carey, Suz Carey (Gary), Daniela (Wayne) Johnson, Mona Garro, Gordy (Shara) Pearson, and Andrea (Dan) Field; 22 grandchildren, Cory (Holly), Alesha, Jesse, Kyle (Brianna), Chelsea (Tyler), Kimberly, Kirsten, Tanner, Colter, Christine (Randy), Katy (Josh), Hilary (Kyle), Brianna, Walker, Trevor, and Emerson; 13 great-grandchildren, Kiana, Izzibel, Lexi, Callena, Braya, Aden, Katy, Frankie, Brezlyn, Brooklyn, Ryker, Tate, and Gage; sisters, Pat (Mike) Hager, Shirley (Rich) Adel, and Judy (Butch) Bach; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Rita; siblings, Lionel, Bud, and Mary Kay; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
