Shirley McCabe deGrood, 92, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, May 15, 2017, at Oak Terrace Retirement Living.

Shirley was born on May 5, 1925, to Harry and Agnes (Whalen) McCabe in Cresco, Iowa.  She was the third of seven children.  After graduating from Lourdes High School in Rochester, MN, she worked as a secretary in the defense department in Washington D.C.

In 1949, she married John L. deGrood in Rochester, MN. In 1952, they moved to Mankato where they raised their 13 children.  Determined and patient, she was a loving wife, caring mother and nurturing grandmother.

Full of creativity, Shirley was an avid antique collector, artistic home decorator and superb knitter.  She loved baking and her chocolate chip cookies, apple pie, cinnamon rolls & apricot bars were the best!  They came straight from her heart.  She enjoyed dabbling in the stock market. It was her side hustle.  She fostered her plants & flowers like children, they blossomed beautifully.  She was everything a wife, mother and grandmother should be - a woman of incredible strength, dignity, beauty & grace.  She will be dearly missed.

Shirley is survived by 11 children, Mary (Jim) Bull, Joan (Gregg) Andersen, Steve deGrood, John (Sarah) deGrood, Marie deGrood, Pete (Elizabeth) deGrood, Anne Slottow, Jane (Lee) Carlstrom, Amy deGrood (Kevin) Croutcher, Gretchen deGrood, Katerina (John) Haley; daughter-in-law, Mary Kay deGrood; son-in-law, Dan Lord; 22 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John; son, Joseph; daughter; Therese; grandson, Derk Slottow; & sons-in-law, Don Wall and Michael Slottow.

The family gratefully thanks the staff at Oak Terrace & Mayo Hospice (staff & volunteers) for their exceptional care & love during the last year of Shirley’s life. Memorials are preferred to Mankato Mayo Hospice.  A private family service will take place.
