Warren “Toby” L. Hanson, 82, of North Mankato, joined God’s heavenly choir on Thursday, May 11, 2017, completing his battle with cancer and dementia at Oak Terrace Assisted Living/Memory Care in North Mankato, Minnesota.
A memorial service will be Monday, August 14, 2017, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 222 Pfau St., Mankato, at 11:30 a.m. The visitation will be two hours prior to the service at church, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Memorials may be given to Christ the King Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.
Toby was born May 30, 1934 in Alexandria, Minnesota to William and Naomi (Foslien) Hanson. He was the oldest of 10 children. Toby graduated from Alexandria High School as their valedictorian in 1952. With his scholastic scholarship, he graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1957 with an accounting degree.
Toby was proud of his Norwegian heritage. He always liked to share that his grandfather donated the land for East Moe Lutheran Church where was baptized and confirmed. They still worship in East Moe. Toby enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing bridge, watching the Twins and Vikings play, and spending time with family and friends.
Toby sang in many choirs. Among them are the Runic 100 male chorus, Christ the King choir, the Vespers, the Riverblenders, and the DaVine singers. He was a soloist at many weddings, memorials, and other special occasions. He will be remembered for his beautiful singing voice and his happy, positive personality. Toby will be missed by many.
Toby is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Barbara; daughter, Cindy (Gene); son, Bill; grandchildren, Amy, Amber, Andrew, Nicole, Jessica, and Leah; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Henry (Pat) Hanson, Ronald Hanson, Charles (Karen) Hanson, James (Lynn) Hanson, Kevin (Terri) Close, and Scott Close; sisters, Mary Jo (Tom) Timmis, Marcia (Paul) Gwierenge, and Susanne (Kent) Ranger; brothers-in-law, Chuck (Jill) Helling and Bruce (Lorraine) Helling; sister-in-law, Gayle Helling, and many nieces and nephews.
Toby was preceded in death by his parents, William and Naomi; step-father, Clarence Close; father and mother-in-law, Irwin and Gladys Loft; infant son, Robert; step-daughter, Christie; niece, Kimberly Helling; and nephews, Karl and Tate Hanson.
The family wishes to thank Pastor John Petersen, Pastor Trish Reedstrom, Mayo Clinic E.R. staff, Mayo West Hospice, Oak Terrace staff, and special friends, Angela, Sandy, Jo Marie, and Kay for all of their love and help. Thank you for the special cards, prayers, and visits.
