Leona Anna Garman, age 96 of North Mankato, died Monday, May 8, 2017 at Ecumen Pathstone Living in Mankato.
Memorial service will be 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2017 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in North Mankato with Rev. Vance Becker officiating. Visitation is from 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2017 at the church until the time of service. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Rapidan. Memorials may be given to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Leona was born October 16, 1920 to Herman and Anna Bartsch in rural Good Thunder. Leona graduated in 1939 from Rapidan High School and attended Mankato Commercial College. She used her training during WWII working for the Federal Government in Washington DC. Leona met Norman Garman and was united in marriage at St John’s Lutheran Church in Rapidan on April 25, 1947. They later settled in this community raising a daughter and son. Leona worked the greater part of her life for Mankato State University from 1959-1986. She had a great passion for growing roses and enjoyed her many travels with Norman. In 1996, they moved to North Mankato.
Leona is survived by her daughter, Julie (Jim) Christensen of Seattle, WA; her son, Richard (Carolyn) Garman of Good Thunder; 8 grandchildren, Jason (Patty), Joshua, and Jenny Christensen, Jessica (Matt) Brandt, Heidi, Ben, Erick (Jamaica), and Jacob (Heidi) Garman; and 10 great-grandchildren. Leona is also survived by her two sisters, Irene Kunkel of Mankato and Anita Born of Souix Falls, SD; her brother, Melvin Bartsch of Good Thunder; and many nephews and nieces.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and two brothers, Arno and Leonard.
