The Rev. Donald Lincoln Walkes, age 99, died April 5, 2017, at Ecumen Pathstone Living Center in Mankato, MN. The memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20 at Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church in North Mankato, MN. Visitation is one hour before the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to The Mayo Foundation or donor’s choice.
Don was born Feb. 12, 1918 in Avon, South Dakota to Henry and Rebecca (Voigt) Walkes. Don graduated from Westmar College in Iowa and began a teaching career to pay his school debt and then go on to Seminary. World War II intervened and he spent time in the Army Air Corps overseas. Upon his return he was discharged and he married Helen Monk, September 7, 1945.
Upon graduation from United Seminary in 1950 he was appointed to his first charge, Pipestone-Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Minnesota. During his ministry he served E.U.B. and United Methodist Churches in Kiester, Robbinsdale, and LeSueur. In addition, he served as the Southwest District Superintendent for the Minnesota Conference, The United Methodist Church. Don retired in 1983 to Arkansas. Later he returned to serve churches as a retired pastor in South Ridge and Hoka. He then settled in North Mankato and enjoyed volunteering.
Woodworking was his hobby. He enjoyed all the topics he could explore through the internet as well as keeping in touch with family and friends. Don will be remembered for his kindness, gentleness, and deep and abiding faith. He had a keen mind, good sense of humor and positive attitude toward life.
Don is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters, Deb Walkes and Laurel (David) Helgerson; grandsons, Donald (Amy) and Samuel Helgerson; three great-grandsons, Chacey, Bryce, and Jensen; one sister, Donna (David) Matthews; sister-in-law, Frances; and many nieces, nephews and their families. Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister and two in laws.
