Robert “Bob” James Kurkowski, 86 of Mankato, died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 20, 2017 at SS. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Military honors will be provided by the Mankato Area Veterans Memorial Rifle Squad. Bob was born July 10, 1930 in Mankato to Norbert and Elsie (Sporehase) Kurkowski. He graduated from Loyola High School in 1948. During the Korean War, Bob served in the Army for two years as a field radio mechanic. He married Beatrice Bongaarts on June 23, 1956. From 1955 to 1957, they toured the country with the Holiday on Ice Show, Bob as a professional skater and Bea as a wardrobe assistant. They returned to Mankato to make their home and raise six children. Bob was employed at Northern States Power for 30 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, building and flying model airplanes, fishing, and having coffee with his airplane flying buddies. He had a unique sense of humor and always had a joke to share.
Bob is survived by his sons, Robert (Denise) Kurkowski, Jr. of New Hope, Jeff (Mavis) Kurkowski of rural Good Thunder, Mike (Marianne) Kurkowski of Magnolia, TX, Ron Kurkowski of Menasha, WI; daughters, Ann (Dan) Nourie of Mankato and Julie (Mike) Drummer of Mankato; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Luke) Johnson, Andrew (Brianna) Kurkowski, JonPaul Kurkowski, Moriah Kurkowski, Lauren Kurkowski, Eric (Jennifer) Kurkowski, Alex Kurkowski, Ryan Kurkowski, Briana Kurkowski, Justin Kurkowski, Matt Nourie, Haley (Jeremiah) Nicolai, Jacob Drummer, and Noah Drummer; five great-grandchildren; brother, John (Dorothy) Kurkowski of Sun City, AZ; sister, Marian Springman of Worthington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beatrice; and sister, Ann Hahn.
