Donald Sigfred Farm, Sr.

Donald Sigfred Farm, Sr., 91 of Mankato, died Monday, February 27, 2017 at Cottagewood Senior Communities in Mankato.

 

Visitation will be 4-7pm, Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Mankato Mortuary and also one hour prior to the service at church. Funeral service will be 11am, Friday, March 3, 2017 at Grace Lutheran Church with Reverend Dr. Scott Olson officiating. Military honors provided by the Mankato Area Veteran Memorial Rifle Squad. Burial will be at Tivoli Cemetery at a later date.

 

The family prefers memorials to Grace Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

 

Don was born in Mankato on June 15, 1925 to David Walter and Hazel Emma (Johnson) Farm. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1943 and was inducted into the United States Marine Corps on December 6, 1944. He served in the South Pacific and China during World War II until being honorably discharged on November 14, 1946. Donald was united in marriage to Esther Whiting on September 11, 1948 at Centenary Methodist Church in Mankato. They farmed together for 45 years until retiring in 1991. In 1992, they relocated to Mankato.

 

Don was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #11, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #269, and the WWII Last Mans Club. He served on the Southern Valley Coop Board for 28 years, Renville County Transport Board for 16 years, St. Clair School Board for 12 years, and the Mankato Creamery Board for 9 years. He also built nine homes for Habitat for Humanity, volunteered for Echo Food Shelf, and drove for VINE. Don also enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, woodworking, and spending time with his family.

 

Survivors include his wife of over 68 years, Esther Farm; 5 children, Don (Karen) Farm of Mankato, Dave (Judy) Farm of Le Center, Deb (Randy) Long of Mankato, Susie (Roger) Seys of St. Clair, and Sharon (Kevin) Goettl of Nicollet; 15 grandchildren, Ryan (Brigette) Farm, Kirstin (Tim) Merseth, Andrew (fiancée Lindsey Ritzinger), Lucas (Ali) Farm, Adam (Amy) Farm, Joshua (Taylor) Farm, Angie (Nathan Stolt) Schmick, Kim (Reed) Hamer, Amanda (Aaron) Bartell, Melanie (Don) Beck, Holly (Brett) Thom, Hannah (Jamie) Luhmann, Jamie (Rosalie) Goettl, Jenna (Jonathan) Wehner, and Caleb (Emily Hauch) Goettl; and 34 great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert (Virginia) Farm; sisters, Lillian (Ray) Thorn and Arlaine (Erve) Jones; and brothers-in-law, Robert Whiting and Ralph Whiting.
