Lawrence “Larry” Jack Volk, age 69, of Mankato, passed away peacefully from complications related to Parkinson’s Disease, on February 15, 2017 at the Lutheran Home, Belle Plaine.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Mankato with Fr. Tim Reker officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Monday, February 20, 2017 at Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary, with a prayer service starting at 6:30p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Lutheran Home, Belle Plaine or The Schola Foundation.
Larry was born on May 30, 1947, in Rugby, ND to Stachius and Christine (Leier) Volk. Larry grew up in Rugby on a farm, with seven brothers and sisters. He graduated from Rugby High School, where he was very active in football, basketball, and baseball. He enlisted in the Army in 1968, and served in Vietnam from 1969-1970 as a combat medic. Larry was awarded a bronze star from his service in Vietnam. After returning from duty, he attended MSU and graduated with a BA in Recreational Therapy. Following graduation, he worked at MRCI where he met his future wife. Larry and Becky were united in marriage on January 12, 1979. Together they had a son and two daughters, and started their life in Mankato.
Larry was passionate about sports, and was an avid Twins, Minnesota Gophers, and UND Hockey fan. He coached his children in Mankato youth sports. Larry never missed any of his children’s sporting events, and was their biggest and loudest fan. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, fishing, and campfires. Larry loved trips to the North Shore with his family.
Larry is survived by his wife, Becky of 38 years; children, John (Thea) Volk, and Sarah (Ben) Morrison; granddaughters, Annika and Naomi Volk; brothers, Robert (Myrna) Volk, Len (Ruth) Volk, Duane (Nanci) Volk, and Clem (Jackie) Volk; sisters, Judy (Ron) Berg, and Vicky (Bud) Moore; two brother-in-laws; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kristin; and sister, Rita Clements.
