Phil was born on February 15, 1956 in Mankato, MN, to Donald and Marcella Reiland. In his earlier years, he was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy for 5 years. He earned an Eagle Scout badge, of which he was very proud. He graduated in 1974 from Loyola High School. Phil was a 4th Degree with the Knights of Columbus. He attended Mankato State College graduating in 1979. While attending college, he belonged to the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, creating a bond with his fraternity brothers that continued to provide support during his battle with cancer.
In 1988, Phil met Kelly Martinson and the two were married in Mankato, MN on October 28, 1989. Kelly was the love of Phil’s life. Phil worked for many years at Carlson Craft before moving to Lakeville, MN. He worked for many different companies, but seemed to have found a position that he enjoyed as a Quality Inspector for Imperial Plastics in Lakeville, MN.
Phil had many passions; he was a Twin’s fan and of course a Viking’s fan. He was an avid Duck stamp collector and a train enthusiast. He often would say he wished he had grown up in the era when trains were the main mode of transportation. He did volunteer work for the Courage Center Alpine Ski program at Welch Village. Phil never forgot about growing up in Mankato and returned often to participate in many of the local and civic events.
Phil and Kelly took many adventurous trips most recently to Alaska.
Phil is survived by his wife, Kelly; brothers, Mike (Chris) of St. Louis, MO, Pat (Beth) of Anchorage, AK; sister, Laura (Ken) Sorensen of Jacksonville, FL; sisters-in-law, Kim (Ken) Neidecker, Karla (Mike) Bruels, and Kari Burt (fiancée, Andrew Johnson); many nephews and nieces who loved their Uncle Phil; and his furry companion, Dudley, who was a source of comfort.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Marcella Reiland.
We would like to thank the team of doctors at the Mayo, and the wonderful Fairview Hospice team that helped to take care of Phil.
In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation in Phil’s name to the Courage Center Alpine Ski Program c/o Courage Center Rehabilitation Center, 3915 Golden Valley Rd., Golden Valley, MN 55422.
