Wallace "Wally" Johnson, age 86, of Mapleton, died Sunday, January 15, 2017, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato surrounded by his family.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church of Mapleton, 201 Troendle St. S.W. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the United Church of Mapleton. Private family burial will be in Sterling Cemetery. Olson-Tichenor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the United Church of Mapleton, The Shriners Hospital for Children, Mayo Clinic Palliative Care, or Parkinson’s research.
Wally was born September 15, 1930, to Albert and Ruby (Phelps) Johnson in Mankato. He moved with his family and attended many schools. They moved to Mapleton where he graduated from Mapleton High School in 1948. He was a member of the Minnesota National Guards and was activated into the army in 1950 and discharged in 1952.
He married Joyce Haberer August 30, 1952. He farmed from 1952 to 1959 and served as a school bus driver and a substitute mail carrier. Wally purchased the Tolzman Insurance Agency of Minnesota Lake in 1959 and opened an office In Mapleton as well as Minnesota Lake, establishing the M & M Insurance Agency. He built the business through the years by acquiring other agencies and adding a tax practice.
He was a member of the United Church of Mapleton where he had served on several boards over the years. He also was Scoutmaster In Mapleton for 6 years; A member of the Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star, Mankato Shriners and T-Birds, the American Legion and served as president of the Union Cemetery board for several years. He always found time to help others, play cards and games with his grandchildren and loved to R.V. with dear friends for 25 years, seeing lots of the U.S.A.
Wally is survived by his wife and dance partner for 64 years, Joyce; three sons, Michael (Julie) Johnson, Winnebago, Rodney (Terri) of Apple Valley, Keith (Kerry) of Satellite Beach, Florida; and one daughter, Julie (Gordy) Oslund of Waseca; grandchildren, Natalie Prescher Norris, Brett (Rebecca) Prescher, Courtney (Wade) Evans, Kevin (Lysa) Johnson, Morgan (fiancé, Adam) Johnson, Katy and Kyle Johnson and two step-grandsons, Andrew (Greta) Anderson and Kyle Anderson; great-grandchildren, John and Jack Norris, Connor Evans, Adelaide “Addie” Prescher and step-great-grandchildren, Tristan Godwin, Addison, Brady, Benjamin Anderson; three sisters-in-law, Audrey Annis, Kay (Stan) Solie and Marian Johnson; as well as many special nieces and nephews . Wally was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harlan and Stanley Johnson; parents-in-law, Arnold and Muriel Haberer; nephew, Donald Annis; niece, Jane Funfsinn; and many aunts and uncles.
