John Mundt, Jr., 92 of Lake Crystal, died Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Oaklawn Healthcare Center in Mankato.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the Lake Crystal Mortuary with visitation one hour prior. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Lake Crystal Cemetery.
John was born September 22, 1924 in Alvord, IA to John C. and Freda W. (Hayden) Mundt. Equipped with a wood stove, a gas lamp, and coal and wood heater, John was raised on large farms in Havana, ND and Kidder, SD without modern-day conveniences like a telephone. He learned to drive a Ford at the age of 10.
John enlisted in the United States Army on December 19, 1945 and was honorably discharged on January 4, 1947. He met Arlene Phelps on a blind date in December 1946 and they were married on November 7, 1947 in Webster, SD. They were blessed with six children, and the family relocated to Lake Crystal in 1961. John worked as a foreman of the maintenance crew at GTA, Grain Terminal Association (later Harvest States) for several years until his retirement at age 55.
John was a fun loving brother and father and a devoted husband, caring for Arlene through her many bouts of cancer until she passed away in 1991. He enjoyed his vehicles, camping, fishing, and hunting. John is dearly loved and will be missed.
John is survived by his children, Dan (Jenny) Mundt, Jane (Mike) Dauer, Julie (Alan) Augustin, John A. Mundt, and Jerome (Jodi) Mundt; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Mundt; parents; son, Robert Mundt; daughter-in-law, Beverly Mundt; and siblings, Francis (Dora) Mundt, Mabel Smart, Roy Mundt, Ted Mundt, and Herbert Mundt.
