Edward Frederick McLean, died on Thursday, December 15, 2016 in Mankato, Minnesota.
Ed was born in Mankato on February 14, 1942, the son of Edward Donald McLean and Beatrice Dilley McLean. He grew up in Mankato and graduated from Mankato High School in 1960. He graduated from Hamline University in 1964 and the University of Oregon in 1968.
Ed taught mathematics in Anoka County from 1966-1970. Although his professional (paid) career lasted only 4 years, he continued to do voluntary (unpaid) tutoring of mathematics, social studies, and English into the 21st century. In 1970, he began working for State Farm Insurance Companies, and in 1971, he moved to Bloomington, Illinois, where he stayed until he returned to Minnesota in 2007.
Ed enjoyed reading, traveling, classical music, country music, politics, and history. Although he traveled to Europe and South America, most of his travels were in North America, where he visited all 50 states, all 10 Canadian provinces, and 18 of Mexico’s 31 states. He enjoyed the national parks and other units of the National Park System.
Following retirement, Ed continued to travel, to support local political candidates, to tutor, and to read more (especially history).
Ed is survived by his sister, Marilyn McLean Johnson and five nieces and nephews, Ann Porter Mclean Jordan, Robert Powell McLean, Edward Breed McLean, Katherine Taft McLean, and Emily McLean Johnson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert David McLean.
Ed has requested that there be no memorial service. Ed was a teacher throughout his life and would prefer memorials to any educational organization, such as colleges, museums, and national parks.
