Harlan Harold Munsen, age 80, of North Mankato, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health System – Mankato, from complications of a stroke.
Funeral Service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 3, 2016, at Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church, North Mankato. Visitation will be held from 2 - 4 p.m., Saturday at the church. Private Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Mankato. Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Harlan was born January 28, 1936 to Harold and Edna (Hayworth) Munsen in Sioux City, IA. He graduated from Anthon High School, Anthon, IA in 1954. He then attended and graduated from Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska in 1960. Harlan served in the Iowa Air National Guard as a pilot in the late 1950’s. From 1961-71 he was a band and choir teacher at various schools. He received his Master's Degree from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. Harlan and his family moved to Mankato where he owned and operated Mid-Bell Music from 1971 until his retirement in 1998.
Harlan was united in marriage to Margie Livermore in 1954. She died in 1988. He later married Dorothy (Mrnak) Meehling in 1991.
Harlan was a member of Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church where he wrote and arranged music for his church band for 27 years. He enjoyed woodworking and was a highly regarded piano tuner.
Harlan is survived by his wife, Dottie of North Mankato; three children, Dave (Tamy) Munsen of Mankato, Randy (Patti) Munsen of Tucson, AZ, and Julie (Randy) Schwartz of Mapleton; three step-children, Nathan (Kelly) Meehling of Mankato, Darlene (Chris) White of Boonsboro, MD, and Angela (Tom) Mercier of Weston, FL; grandchildren, Jason (Lisa) Wachtel, Anna, Mariah, Matthew, and Ava Munsen, César, Lulu, and Nick Munsen, Macallan, Olivia, Alia, Lydia, and Ciaran Meehling, Sara, Cameron, Evelynn, Sonia, Bridget, and Sean White, Grace, Luke, and Finley Mercier; great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Brayden, Brielle and Brycen Wachtel; brother, Gary (Mary) Munsen of Lawton, IA; sister, Jan Munsen of Sioux City, IA; nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margie in 1988; mother-in-law, Della Livermore; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ben and Grace Mrnak; sisters-in-law, Nancy McKinley and Diane Mrnak.
