Robert “Bob” Charles Schmidt, 83 of Mankato, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 25, 2016 at Mayo Clinic Health System.
Memorial service will be held at 1:00pm, Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary with visitation starting at 11:00am. Military honors will follow the service.
Bob was born in Cleveland, MN on March 31, 1933 to Gilbert Charles and Thelma Luella (Bird) Schmidt. He married Barbara Jean George on June 30, 1956. They recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Bob attended county school near Cleveland and later Cleveland Public School. Following school, he entered the Marine Corp at the age of 17 and served during the Korean War.
Bob worked various construction jobs upon his return from the Marines. He found work with R.W. Carlstrom Construction where he was employed for more than 42 years. Upon retirement, Bob and Barb enjoyed more than 20 years being “snow birds” in Mesa, AZ. Bob came out of retirement during those 20 years, doing security work in the retirement community where they resided.
Bob was loyal, generous, and a hard worker, qualities that he and Barb instilled in their four children. He enjoyed “tinkering” in his workshop, fishing, and doing yardwork. Most importantly, Bob enjoyed spending time with his family.
Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, Joe, Randy, and Richard all of Mankato; daughter, Lori (fiancé, Michael Kramer) of North Mankato; grandchildren, Nicole, Matthew, Ashley, Ryan, Alisha, Joshua (Karley) and Amanda; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Filler of St. Peter and Janice Dillon of Faribault; brothers, Roger (Andrea) of Madison Lake and Terry (Monica) of Cleveland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marion Schmidt, Marlene Ballman, and Lois Herman; brothers, Donald, James “Jimmy” and George Schmidt; and granddaughter, Jessica Kuhle Schmidt.
