Millie was born on August 28, 1920, in Sisseton, South Dakota, to Michael and Anna (Stein) Olk, the fourth of nine children. Her family moved to Watkins, MN, where Millie grew up, attended school, and worked for various neighbors to supplement her family’s income. In the early 1940s, Millie worked at a camp laundry in San Luis Obispo, CA. After the war, Millie returned to Minnesota and, on August 27, 1946, she married Francis Lorentz. They farmed for 13 years in the Janesville and Mankato areas. After moving to Mankato, Millie worked for many years at Johnson’s Laundry and Mankato State University, retiring in 1982.
Millie was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. She loved her family very much and, more than anything else, enjoyed being with them and helping them in any way she could. She enjoyed attending her grandchildrens’ school plays, choir concerts, dance recitals, swim meets, and other sport and school activities where she could lend her encouragement and support. Millie was an accomplished cook, baker and seamstress. Her lovely hand-embroidered dresser scarves and dish towels were big sellers at church fundraisers and craft shows.
Millie is survived by her daughters, Pat Lorentz and Bev (Jerry) Hampel, both of White Bear Lake; her son, Bill Lorentz (and special friend, Sue Splinter) of Mankato; granddaughters, Sarah (Dave) Hendley, Melissa Lorentz, and Rebecca Hampel; grandson, Ben Hampel; great-granddaughters, Linnea and Madelyn Hendley; and many nieces and nephews.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Francis; an infant son who died at birth; former daughter-in-law Julie Lorentz; three sisters, Marie Lambrecht, Annetta and Annella Olk; and five brothers, Clarence, Ernie, Jerry, Eddie, and Raymond Olk.
The family extends a very special thank you to the great staff at Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center for the loving, compassionate care they provided to Millie for the last 3-1/2 years and also to the Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice Program West Team who helped make Millie’s last days more comfortable.
