Dixie was born on December 18, 1932, in Mankato to Helen and Curtis Sheehan. She met the love of her life, Willie Thielges, at the hilltop ice skating rink – she stated she knew that she “had him” when he pushed her in the snowbank and washed her face with snow. They were married on August 23rd, 1952. Willie entered the military, and they were stationed in Fort Bragg, NC, for the beginning of their marriage and later, the birth of their first child.
Dixie lived most of her life in Mankato, MN, graduating from Mankato High School in 1951. She thoroughly enjoyed caring for her family as they grew up, as well as baking out of her home, political discussions, and tennis matches with Willie and their friends. She volunteered for Birthright for several years, and was also employed 5 years as a Family Support Worker for Blue Earth County. With family and friends, Dixie and Willie built a log cabin on 40 acres in Wisconsin for bow hunting and “pioneer” living. Family fun included curling, camping, canoeing, and after retirement, traveling in their 5th wheel throughout the United States.
She is survived by her children, Tony (Mary) Thielges of Las Vegas, NV, Mitch (Sue Burger) Thielges of Mankato, Sharon (Bob) Wright of Grantsburg, WI, and Joe (Cheryl Shaw) Thielges of Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren, Dan (Heather) Thielges, Tom (Norma Mlaker) Thielges, Jamie (Adam Kopesky) DeAtley, Tracy (Frankie) Culbertson, Ryan Thielges, Derek Thielges, and Mikayla Thielges; great-grandchildren, Kyle DeAtley, Miranda DeAtley, Seth Thielges, Zak Thielges, Khya Culbertson, and Jackson Culbertson. She is also survived by her sister Darla Schulte; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she dearly loved.
