Philip Elsworth Mickelson, age 92, of Butternut, passed away Monday, September 5, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health System – Mankato.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 12, 2016, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Butternut with Pastor Salim Kaderbhai, officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 -11:00 a.m., Monday at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Lake Crystal Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Philip was born April 4, 1924, to Martin and Lena (Larson) Mickelson in Butternut Township, Blue Earth County. He married Bonita “Bonnie” G. Elkins on August 23, 1947, in rural Madelia. They resided on the family farm in Butternut throughout their 69 years together.
Philip was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Butternut. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending Pioneer Power, and Farmfest. He is best remembered for his quirky sense of humor. He enjoyed the simple things, like a drive to go look for deer or for a hamburger, which always resulted with the grandkids getting to sit on his lap and drive the pick-up.
Philip is survived by his two children, Peggy VanGuilder of Mankato; Joe (JJ) Mickelson of Butternut; three grandchildren, Kris (Bob) Klein, Terry VanGuilder, and Josh Mickelson; three great-grandchildren, Michael and Eryn Klein, Brayden VanGuilder; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ronald Elkins, Dotta Jean Cole, and Merton (Cathy) Elkins; nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie on January 23, 2016; son-in-law, Brad VanGuilder; five siblings, Helm Osten, Alice Jones, Peter Mikkelson, Leonard “Stub” Mickelson, and Gladys Gilbertson.
