Russell Elroy Sloan, 89 of Lake Crystal, died Monday, September 5, 2016 at his home.
Graveside service will be held at 11am, Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Lake Crystal Cemetery. Reverend Ashley Swoboda of the United Methodist Church in Lake Crystal will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #294.
Russell was born in Watonwan County to James and Margaret (Rubedor) Sloan. He was baptized from the Baptist Church in Madelia.
Russell was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until his discharge in 1946. He was a Navy Seabees and was stationed in Atu, Alaska. Russell did road construction with Judd Brown as a heavy equipment operator. He was united in marriage to Delores (Austin) Sloan on June 25, 1949 in Lake Crystal. Russell and Delores just celebrated 67 years of marriage. Russell was a member of the Lake Crystal American Legion Post #294 for 62 years and was active with the honor guard. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Mankato. He received the quilt of valor, which was presented to him at his home on May 12, 2016.
Russell enjoyed ice fishing, smoking fish, cribbage, solitaire, and reading western books.
He is survived by his wife, Delores; sons, Jim (Kathy) Sloan of Mankato, Bill Sloan of Red Wing, Dave Sloan of Lake Crystal; daughter, Julie (Jerry C. Lewis) Miller of Lake Crystal; grandchildren, Amy Merkley of Clearwater, FL; Matt (Kirsten) Sloan of Red Wing, and Patty Sloan of Mankato; great-grandson, Zachary Sloan.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edward Sloan; in-laws, Frank and Grace Austin; son, Steven, in 2013; and son-in-law, Glenn Miller.
