Bernadine M. Faltersack

Bernadine Marie Faltersack, age 90, of North Mankato, died peacefully in her home surrounded by family on Monday, September 5, 2016.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 10, 2016, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato, with Fr. Andy Olsem officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the mass.  Northview-North Mankato Mortuary handled the arrangements.  Memorials may be given to the Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice (1400 Madison Ave., Ste 324A, Mankato, MN 56001), Holy Rosary Catholic Church, or the American Diabetes Association.

Bernardine, known as “Bunny,” was born on December 23, 1925, in Mankato, the daughter of Frank L. and Hedwig S. (Schultz) Weimar. She married Roland F. Faltersack on June 7, 1949, at St.Peter and Paul's Catholic Church.  A 1943 graduate of Mankato High School, Bernadine worked for nine years as the administrative secretary for Mankato Technical College. In the 1950s, the couple opened the first automated laundromat in Mankato, “The Rub-A-Dub Laundry.” When Roland began working at North Star Concrete Company, Bernadine stayed home raising their family.  From 1965 to 1973, Bernardine and her late husband owned Spinner's Bar in North Mankato, in a joint partnership.

Married to an avid fisherman and hunter, Bernadine traveled to the lakes and forests of Minnesota and Canada, winning the Master Angler Award in Manitoba one year. Those who knew her will remember her saying, “I learned soon in my marriage to Roland if I wanted a vacation, I needed to learn to hunt and fish!”

“When Mom and Dad bought land up north, they created a family gathering place where we could hunt and enjoy the north-woods,” says daughter Barbara Booton.  Bernadine's children agree their mother was a solid rock of support, “providing a helping hand many times to those she loved and to those who loved her."

“Mother will be remembered as a beautiful seamstress,” says daughter Susan Orchard. “Our home was filled with her handiwork; her most recent project a cross-stitched tablecloth for her 90th birthday.”

Bernadine's love for gardening was not only apparent in the groomed flowerbeds surrounding her home, but in her joy in passing down an heirloom plant “Hosta Plantingenia Elegantissima” from her maternal grandmother's gardens to each one of her four children and grandchildren.  A life-long member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Bernadine was a member of the Council of Catholic Women, the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), and the Ladies Auxiliary VFW.

Bernadine is survived by her children: two daughters, Susan (the late Richard Orchard) of North Mankato and Barbara (Curtis) Booton of Ely; two sons, Ronald (Monique) Faltersack of Britt and Russell Faltersack (partner, Gary Truax) of Robbinsdale; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Delores “Jean” Thompson of Eagle Lake; sisters-in-law, Delores Weimar of Mankato and Lucille Faltersack of Elysian; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 50 years, Roland Francis Faltersack (1999); brother, Robert Weimar; son-in-law, Richard J. Orchard; and two nephews.
