C. June Hughes, a lifelong Mankato resident, passed away peacefully at Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato on Thursday, August 4, 2016.
Memorial service 11am Wednesday, August 10th at Northview - North Mankato Mortuary. Visitation one hour prior. Private interment at Woodland Hills.
June was born February 1, 1927 in Mankato, MN to Joseph and Lotty Weimar. She was an only child. June grew up in the home of her maternal grandmother, Charlotte Buggert along with her aunt and uncle, John and Florence Storm and their daughter, Dorothy Faye Storm Blomgren.
June graduated from Mankato High School in 1944, and worked for her uncle’s Pure Oil business, keeping the books. In 1947, June married Eldon Hughes of Mankato and they had four children.
Following the birth of her last child in 1956, June started college at Mankato State College. To pay for her tuition and books she taught private piano and organ lessons in her home. June graduated from Mankato State College with honors in 1965 earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Music Education. She again attended and graduated from Mankato State University, Cum Laude, in 1981 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.
June taught in the District #77 Mankato School System for over 23 years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Entr Nous Study Club. She’d been a Stephens Minister, taught Sunday school, directed hand bell and vocal choirs, had been a substitute organist, Bible study teacher, and member of the Centenary United Methodist Church. June was also a member of the Mankato Music Club, Mankato Area Retired Educator’s Association and the MSU Fund Drive. Throughout her active life, she also found time for extensive traveling, reading and playing bridge. She was a resident of Realife Cooperative.
June was predeceased by her husband, Eldon; sons, Jim and Jack; and daughter, Joan.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan (Mark) Anderson of Tampa, FL; five grandchildren, Jill Anderson (Jim Nunan) Bronxville, NY, Kim Anderson, Newburyport, MA, Amanda MacGregor (Matthew) Eagan, MN, Ryan Hughes, Minneapolis, MN, Jackson Hughes, Fridley, MN; great-grandchildren, Callum MacGregor, Eagan, MN, Vivian Nunan, Bronxville, NY; daughters-in-law; Jodeen Douglass (Perry) Fridley, MN, Darlene Hughes, Burnsville, MN.
