Lowell Carter Johnson, 81, of North Mankato, succumbed to cancer at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital surrounded by family on July 31st, 2016.
Visitation will be held from 4-7PM, Thursday, August 4th at Northview~North Mankato Mortuary. Funeral service will be 11:00AM, Friday, August 5th at Belgrade Avenue United Methodist with visitation one hour prior. Military honors will follow at church. Burial will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Twin Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America or Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church.
Lowell was born July 20, 1935 in Mankato to Floyd and Grace (Maxfield) Johnson. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 2, 1954 and was later honorably discharged. Lowell was united in marriage to Jean Swab on October 11, 1969 in Waseca. Lowell was a loving father, husband, grandfather, nephew, and beloved “uncle” to many, including the Maxfield and Swab clans. He was a friend to all who knew him.
Lowell lived a life of service. He was employed by E.F. Johnson in Waseca for 10 years. He retired from Twin Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America after 21 years, and remained active as a volunteer until his death. Lowell served on the Executive Board, was a founding member of the Camp Cuyuna Alumni Association and also reactivated Troop 29 at Belgrade Avenue United Methodist.
Lowell served the community as a member of the North Mankato Volunteer Fire Department, and volunteered with Hot Meals on Wheels. He was Past President of the Kato Community Club where he coordinated Bell Ringers for the annual Salvation Army campaign, and additionally served on several committees at his church, Golden K and the Board of Koppen Gardens.
Lowell’s love of nature occupied much of his spare time with fishing, especially at the family cabin on Duck Lake, camping, birdwatching, frequently along the Judson Bottom Road to see the Bald Eagles, and working crossword puzzles in pen. Yearly visits to Camp Cuyuna, where he could enjoy all these activities, was one of his favorite places.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Jean of 47 years; daughters, Jackie (Joe) Weiss of Chippewa Falls, WI, and Kim Griffin (Danette Kimball) of Duluth; his four cherished grandchildren, Allison, Amanda, Ryne, and Alex; sisters-in-law, Janet Krueger and Joyce (Ken) Patterson of Green Valley, AZ; brother-in-law, Jim (Jinni) Swab, Lincolnshire, IL; and cats, Charlie and Murphy.
