Darlene Emma Jans, 93 of Mankato, died Friday, July 22, 2016 at Oaklawn Healthcare Center.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm, Monday, July 25, 2016 at Mankato Mortuary. Funeral service will be 10:30am, Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery in Mankato.
Darlene was born September 20, 1922 in Sioux City, Iowa. Her parents, Otto and Wilma (Wulf) Hinrichs, passed away when Darlene was a child, so she was raised by her grandparents, Karl and Minnie Wulf. Because she was an only child, her cousins felt more like siblings, a relationship she cherished throughout her life. Darlene attended a rural county school until eighth grade and later moved to Minneapolis when she was 18 to help build airplanes during WWII. On November 7, 1946, Darlene was united in marriage to Irvin Jans in St. Clair. As newlyweds, they built their home on Marsh Street, and although they may have moved to other homes, they raised their family on Marsh Street for the next fifty years. Irvin passed away in 2004 and Darlene transitioned to Primrose Retirement Community in 2006.
For 22 years, Darlene worked in the food service department at the Mankato School District until her retirement in 1984. In her spare time, she enjoyed golfing, bowling, and reading the newspaper. She and Irvin loved wintering in Texas, playing penny or nickel slots at Jackpot Junction, and traveling throughout the United States and Canada. Darlene was fiercely independent, opinionated, and ahead of her time. She will be missed.
Darlene is survived by her daughters, Judy Hoskins of Sebring, FL, Jan Shaw of Eagle Lake, MN, and Joan (Keith) Strayer of Somonauk, IL; grandchildren, Tina (Brian) Holcombe, Tiffany Gannon, Rachel Shaw, Katie Shaw, Tara (Kenton) Mustain, Aaron Strayer; great-grandchildren, Zachary Gannon, Blake Holcombe, Chase Holcombe, Caleb Mustain, and Cameron Mustain; cherished cousins, Lorraine Washburn, Karl Harrison, Annette Custer, and William Harrison.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin; parents; son-in-law, Roger Hoskins; and cousins, Irene Townsend and Betty Held; and aunt, Emma (Bill) Harrison.
