Leon was born on October 13, 1936 to Peter and Marie (Cattrysse) DeWitte in Mankato, Minnesota. After graduating from Loyola High School in 1954, he started working at Jack’s Tire Shop. In 1960 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany until 1962 when he returned to Mankato and recapping tires. Leon and LeeAnn (Spotts) were married on April 20, 1963. He worked at the tire shop until 1973 when he went to work as a custodian at Mankato East High School until he retired in 2000 as the head custodian. Leon enjoyed listening to old-time music and watching TV from his chair including Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and wrestling to name a few. He looked forward to camping, gardening, riding snowmobiles and motorcycles, and shopping for new cars and new vans. He also liked to cook, grill, bake and shop for bargains at the grocery stores every day. He enjoyed celebrating his and family member’s birthdays, making cakes and opening presents. Christmas was his favorite time of the year, and he always did a lot of decorating. He also enjoyed having coffee with the guys at McDonald’s every morning. Over the years Leon and LeeAnn traveled to almost all 50 states including driving up to Alaska. They were fortunate because all of their grandkids were raised in Mankato. There was nothing that they enjoyed more than spending time with them, and going to their activities.
Leon is survived by his wife, LeeAnn, daughter DeDe and son-in-law Paul Meyer, and daughter Darci and son-in-law Doug Pendergast, granddaughter Megan (Meyer) Beck and husband Mitchell Beck, grandsons Mitch Meyer and girlfriend Katie Burns, Parker Pendergast, and Peter Pendergast and granddaughter Payton Pendergast. Also survived by sister, Mary Lou Nilson and brother, Jim (Carol) DeWitte, and many dear nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family requests that donations for the Echo Food Shelf be brought to the services.
Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, so loved, so missed, so very dear.
