Alice Churchill Hadley, age 96 of Mankato, died quietly Wednesday June 15, 2016 at Laurel’s Peak in Mankato.

 

Funeral service at 5:00 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2016 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mankato with Rev. Marilla Whitney officiating. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis with her husband Paul R. Hadley. Visitation one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the donor’s choice in her name.

 

Alice was born to Eleanor (nee Franzen) and Carroll Churchill, missionaries in India who moved to Oberlin, Ohio and then to Berea Kentucky where Alice grew up. She graduated from Foundation High School in Berea but “finished” at Stephan’s Women’s College in St. Louis, MO where she perfected her culinary and seamstress arts.   She completed a Bachelor of Art’s degree in art from Ithaca College, NY where she met Paul, her future husband. They married in Berea, November 25, 1942. Ultimately they moved to Mankato MN in 1969 when Paul was VP and General Manager of Kayot Corporation Marine Division.

 

Alice put her artistic talents to work as mother, seamstress and cook everywhere she lived providing food, dresses, hats, good cheer and a calm presence. After arriving in Mankato, she became involved in the Women’s Guild of St. John’s, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Campfire Girls and the Girl Scouts.

 

Alice of North Mankato is survived by four children, Anne Noss ( Dr. Charles) Stanton, KY, Paul R. (Nancy) Hadley III Charleston, SC, Dr. Patricia (Michael) Vermeersch Ravenna, OH, and Kim (Patrick) Irving, Denver, CO; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by brothers Alfred and Charles Churchill; her sister Cherry Belanger.
