Sylvia Mae More

Sylvia Mae More, 100, passed away June 3, 2016 at The Mapleton Community Home.

Sylvia was born January 3, 1916 in Aitkin, MN. To Rose Belle (McCollum) and Edward G. Scott. She graduated from North High School in Minneapolis, then attended Northwestern Bible college and The U of M before starting Nurses training at Northwestern hospital in 1938. Sylvia met her husband of 62 years, Arthur W. More, during her first year of Nurses training.  They married  3 months later on October 1, 1938 at her parent’s home in Minneapolis.

Sylvia put her nursing career on hold and moved to Mapleton after her wedding and spent the remainder of her life here. Working as a nurses aide at Mapleton Community  Home and Parkview in Wells.

When she turned 50 she decided to go back to school and get her Nursing License. She graduated in 1968 from St. Joseph hospitals school of nursing in the last class they offered for nursing. She spent the next 15 years at St. Joe’s as an L.P.N. and retired in 1983.

Art and Sylvia were able to spend many summers at their lake home in Park Rapids. Lots of family fun and memories were made those summers.

Sylvia enjoyed knitting , crocheting and sewing, was a wonderful cook and made the best fruit cake and Rhubarb pie ever! She loved to roller skate in the summer at Carl’s Roller rink and Curling in the winter in her younger years. The Minnesota Twins were her team of choice and never missed listening to or watching them on TV if possible.

Sylvia joined the Silver Link #96 Rebekah lodge in Mapleton in May of 1940. She became the President of the Minnesota Rebekah Assembly in 1958 and has remained a member of the lodge until her death.

Sylvia achieved her goal to make it to 100 on January 3, 2016, celebrating her day with her family and friends. When she had reached 98, she decided she might as well live until she made it to 100!  She was a strong, determined lady!

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
