Walter Helmer Hagen, 90 of Mankato, died Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Pathstone Living.

Mass will be at 1pm, Friday, May 20 at Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be 5-7pm, Thursday, May 19 at Mankato Mortuary and also one hour prior to the Mass at church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors.

Walt was born September 7, 1925 in Mankato to Helmer and Mary (Brehm) Hagen. He attended Loyola High School and enlisted into the United States Navy during WWII on August 25, 1943 during his junior year. He was stationed on the island of Ulithi Atoll Lagoon, 360 miles southwest of Guam, and was honorably discharged on April 12, 1946. In 2007, Walt was proudly presented his high school diploma from Loyola High School under Operation Recognition through the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Walt farmed on his sister’s farm for five years after being discharged. On June 2, 1951, he was united in marriage to Delores Dauber and they raised four children. Walter worked for Bowen Tire, Brennan Gas, and Quality Extrusion until retiring in 1990. After Delores passed away in 1987, Walt married Adeline Trask on September 24, 1988.

Walt was a jack of all trades and enjoyed dancing, playing cards, drinking coffee with friends, working on cars, woodworking, and creating unique whirligigs for friends and fundraisers. He served on the VFW 950 firing squad and color guard for over 15 years. Walt was also active with the VFW, Knights of Columbus, and Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Survivors include his children, Roseanne (Bruce) Cline of Mankato, Linda (Daniel) Phillips of Mankato, and Bonita (Steven) Allen of Eagan; daughter-in-law, LeeAnn  Hagen of North Mankato; grandchildren, Daniel (Casey Kuderer) Hagen, Andrea (Elliot) Zieske, Candi Cline, Janel (Terry) Hageman, Julie Cline, Nicole Jacobson, Katherine Phillips, Hannah Phillips, Rebecca Allen, Sarah (Nathan) Burlingame, and Jacob Allen; great-grandchildren, Haley, Jack, Abbie, Jayden, Lydia, Kael, Olive, Brandy, Mela, Alexis, Evan, Emmalyn, and Henry; siblings, Harold Hagen, Dorothy Raway, and Paul (Mildred) Hagen. He’s also survived by Adeline’s children, Kathy (Todd) Kenward, David (Sally) Trask, and John (Pat) Trask; her 7 grandchildren; and her 13 great-grandchildren.

Walt was preceded in death by his wife, Delores; wife, Adeline;  son, Gerald “Jerry” Hagen; 6 infant daughters; infant twin sons; siblings, Lawrence Hagen, Agnes Frederick, Doris Hagen, Robert Hagen, Sister Louis Marie Hagen, and Roselia Hagen.
